This underproduced style has some mass market traction, but has been neglected in the craft world for the most part. Grapefruit is fun because it has a citrus angle to its flavour profile, but has depth and versatility as well. Combined with the brettanomyces underpinnings of beer background, it puts the "continental" in continental breakfast fruits. While the blend on its own is not particularly sour, the acid present from the grapefruit provides a nice tart balance. Very few beers have the versatility to perform as a sunny day beer, but have the flavour complexity to act as a dinner pairing beer as well. Whether starches or fats, the tart nature of the grapefruit and the complex malt structure of the base beer enhance even the most banal dining pairings.
